Sustainability and the wider environment

🎯 Covers these PMP exam tasks: 3.8 Evaluate external business environment changes

Every project has an impact beyond its own boundaries: energy and water use, waste, emissions, and effects on nearby communities and on the people working on it. Sustainability means meeting the project's goals today without harming the ability of people and the environment to thrive tomorrow.

Many organizations and investors use the term ESG, short for three areas: Environmental (such as emissions and waste), Social (such as worker safety and rights, and the project's effect on the local community), and Governance (such as integrity, transparency and anti-corruption). The project manager helps the organization meet its commitments in these areas.

Thinking sustainably means looking at the product's full life cycle, not just the project phase: where do the materials come from? How much energy will the product use over its years of operation? And what happens to it at the end of its life? Sometimes the cheapest option during the project is the most expensive one for the organization over twenty years of operation.

On top of this, a project lives in a changing external environment: market swings, inflation and exchange rates, changing regulations, new technologies, and social and political conditions. These factors are outside the PM's control, but not outside their responsibility: the PM monitors them continuously, logs them as risks, assesses their impact, and adjusts the plan through formal change control when needed.

💡 Key points

  • Sustainability: meet today's goals without harming tomorrow.
  • ESG = Environmental, Social and Governance.
  • Think about the product's full life cycle, not just the project's cost.
  • Monitor external factors (market, economy, regulation) and treat them as risks.

🌍 Real-life example

A food factory is building a new production line. There were two cooling options: one 15% cheaper but using more energy, and a slightly pricier, more efficient one. The PM calculated the cost over the line's lifetime and found the efficient system saves more than its extra price within four years, so he presented this to the sponsor, who chose it. During execution, the exchange rate for the currency used to import equipment rose, but the PM had already logged that risk with a reserve, so it was handled without a crisis.
